Welcome to The English Connection
The English Connection is the brainchild of a dedicated team of neighbours living on Bullers Lane, in the heart of Colombo 7 — one of Sri Lanka’s most affluent and vibrant areas. Driven by a shared commitment to social equity, we strive to bridge the educational gap by offering free English lessons to children from poor families. We believe that mastering English opens doors to education, employment, and greater life opportunities, helping children and their communities thrive. Through compassion, community, and connection, we are building a brighter future, one word at a time.
Our Mission
We are dedicated to empowering children from underprivileged families through free English education. Our work captures the beauty of kindness and opportunity, providing a pathway to a better future for those we serve. Every program we offer is designed to inspire connection, and promote growth through the gift of learning.
Our vision
A Sri Lanka where every child, regardless of background, can dream bigger and achieve more through the power of the English language.
Permission & Accreditation
The Town Hall, the Cinnamon Gardens Police, the Welfare Board of the area have all given their approval and dropped in to witness classes in action. Books were initially sponsored by Atlas Books, MD Gunasena and Vijitha Yapa and since then Bullers Lane residents sponsor these clinics of learning English.
Our work force
The main body of EC comprises of a university lecturer, lawyers, bankers, business ladies, influencers and teachers, like me. They cover a rudimentary syllabus, seated on mats on the floor, ensuring that each of their three charges of the day (as we rotate students to assistant teacher) would follow the lessons of the day. The idea is to provide a ratio of 3 students to 1 teacher assistant.
OUR program
We provide underprivileged children with a fun and supportive environment to learn English through activities like reading, spelling, drawing, singing, speech practice, and drama. These programs build their confidence, creativity, and communication skills, helping them become confident young learners ready to succeed.
Reading
We start with the basics—teaching children to recognize letters, understand sounds, and gradually move towards reading simple words and sentences. Our goal is to make reading a joyful experience, encouraging children to explore stories and expand their imagination.
Spelling
Through engaging games and interactive exercises, we help children build their spelling skills. This not only strengthens their vocabulary but also lays the foundation for clear and confident writing.
drawing
Art is a universal language. Drawing sessions allow children to express their creativity and emotions freely. These activities also enhance focus, fine motor skills, and self-confidence while providing a break from traditional classroom learning.
singing
Music brings joy and helps children remember words and phrases effortlessly. Singing sessions improve pronunciation, rhythm, and listening skills while building a sense of teamwork and fun.
Speach
We focus on building confidence in spoken English through simple conversations, storytelling, and guided practice. Over time, children develop the courage to express themselves clearly and independently.
drama
Drama activities combine language learning with creativity. By acting out short plays and role-plays, children learn new vocabulary, improve their speaking skills, and develop teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
